Autorun.inf: Autorun.inf is a special file stored on the removable storage media, which contains all the information for the operating system whenever the media is attached to your system.

Bad Sector: Bad sector is a part on the computer disk drive which has been damaged and fails to read the data stored in that particular space.

BSOD: The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), the name commonly used by the Microsoft Windows users and first found in Windows 1.0. Generally indicates the screen with error message saying that “Windows is about top crash”. It will process the unsaved data at the occurrence in a RAW file format called Dump file.

C

Catalog File: Catalog file is a special type of file in the HFS + file system. It contains the information about all the files and folders stored on your Mac OS X Volumes.

CD-ROM Drive: CD-ROM drive helps in functioning read and write operations on CD-ROM (Compact Disk - Read Only Memory). CD-ROM are capable of playing both audio cd's as well as computer data cd's.

CF Card: Compact Flash card is a mass storage device and it is used in many electronic devices such as Phones, iPods, Tablets etc to store files like pictures, audio, videos or other documents.

CHKDSK: CHKDSK(Check Disk) is a command used for DOS, OS/2 and Windows Operating System to know the file system integrity status of floppy disk and hard disk.

Convert FAT to NTFS: FAT file system is used for smaller storage devices, in order to store large amount of data on a partition, we need to convert FAT file system to NTFS.

Convert Raw to NTFS: We cannot store data on the raw file system as it is the file system installed on the hard disk, immediately after creating it in the factory, hence raw file system needs to be converted to NTFS.

CRC error: It is an error detection mechanism used in networking devices and storage devices to verify the available raw data in the drive doesn’t undergo any accidental changes. It has two phases the CRC generator and the CRC checker. The CRC generator uses polynomial division to generate a resultant output. In the receivers end, the actual data is checked based on the arrived data with the generated CRC.

Data Erasure: Data erasure is a software-based method of overwriting data to erasing all data from hard drive or any storage services such as pen drives, memory cards, etc.

Disk Imaging: In disk imaging, complete replication of the hard disk i.e., registry programs, software, structure is done. Sector by sector mirroring of the complete drive, which includes unused sectors as well, takes place in disk imaging.

Diskpart: Diskpart is similar to MS-DOS Fdisk utility that lets you manipulate, view and create the partitions from the command line; it is a freeware and can be downloaded from Microsoft’s Website.

Disk Utility: Disk Utility is a tool developed by Apple for performing disk related tasks such as creation, compression, encryption and conversion of disk images in Mac OS X.

DivX: DivX short for Digital video Express, is a compression scheme that reduces the video file size on computers and on DVDs to fit into a standard CD without loss of quality...

DLL File: Dynamic Link Library is a collection of small modules of programs that can be called upon when needed by other executable program (.exe) that is executed.

DOD Standard 5220.28 STD: DOD Standard 5220.28 STD is the data sanitization standard, recommended by the US Department of Defense (DoD) to erase data from your hard drives permanently.

DOS: DOS or Disk Operating System is a command line non-graphical operating system. It was developed by Microsoft in July 1981.

Encrypt Decrypt File: Encrypting a file or folder is a method which protects data from other users. Decrypting a file is the reverse process of encryption, which decodes and makes the file readable.

Exchange Server: Microsoft Exchange Server is an application which acts as a server side of client–server functionalities

exFAT : exFAT is a modern modern file system designed by Microsoft Corp, specially for storage devices that use flash memory. It supports data transfer between electronic devices and computers. exFAT works well with latest operating systems including Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 (Linux), Mac OS X 10.6.5, etc.

F

File Allocation Data (FAT): File Allocation Table (FAT) is a file system with the table of contents that an operating system maintains on a hard drive.

FAT 12: In 1980, FAT 12 was designed as floppy disk file system. FAT 12 uses 12 bit entries for addressing clusters in smaller capacity hard disks and 1.44 Megabytes and 2.88 Megabytes floppy disk.

FAT 16: FAT or File Allocation Table 16 is the file system architechture that uses 16 bits for each entry in the file allocation table of a disk.

FAT 32: The file allocation table which uses 32-bit cluster addressing to store files on hard disk. The maximum size of a file that FAT32 disk or partition can hold is 4 gigabyte

File Compression: File Compression is the process of reducing the size of the files and packaging multiple files into a single archive file to save space or transmission time.

Flash Drive: A storage device which helps in transfering data from one system to another system using USB port is known as "Flash Drive".

FLV Files: FLV stands for Flash Video which is a container file format used for deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player 6 and newer versions.

Format Error: Format errors are the errors that are caused by missing system files or broken file system that makes the device unrecognizable by OS

GRUB: GRUB stands for GRand Unified Bootloader is a bootloader package that is developed to support multiple OS and allow the user to select one during boot-up.

Hard Drive Sector: Sector is the sub-unit of hard drive Track. Each sector stores fixed amount of data, which is usually as 512 bytes or 2048 bytes per sector.

HDCP: HDCP is a type of system in Mac which avoids recording of videos from unauthorized users and devices..

HFSX: HFSX is the advanced version of HFS file system that is used for organizing files on a Macintosh hard disk.

Hierarchical File System (HFS): Hierarchical File System (HFS) is the file system used by Mac Operating System and developed by Apple Inc. HFS is designed to work on floppy, CD-ROMs and hard disk drives.

Non Bootable Disk: Non bootable disk is nothing but a device storage that has a file system to store any kind of data in it. It doesn’t have any operating system or utility programs that can initiate a normally configured PC. There are no certain boundaries or limits for non bootable disks as of in bootable disks. Any storage drive of any brands can be a non bootable disk.

Partition Boot Sector: Hard drive is the main storage area of data which is further divided into number of partitions. Every partition contains its own volume boot sector. Volume boot sector is different from master boot sector which controls the entire hard disk, but similar in functionality, this concept is also known as boot volume record or partition boot sector.
